Therapy Dog team can provide comfort and emotional support to people in the justice system, give a sense of normalcy, assist with opening up communication, provide a healthy distraction from an overwhelming trauma response and a physical source of calming touch.
Therapy dogs typically attend court for 90 minutes at a time. Teams rotate through the different courts, however, the teams can receive special requests from police officers or court professionals if someone is experiencing high levels of anxiety and could benefit from a furry friend. They’re found in publicly accessible areas, such as the foyer.
